Series of short updates to follow on events of past few months for my loyal but neglected followers (all 5 of you.....).
I visited Saudi the other weekend - well almost - you can drive along the bridge to Saudi from Bahrain, very handy indeed and easy to find, in fact 9 road signs out of 10 will point you in that direction. Anyhow tourists like me, without the hard to obtain (particularly you are a woman) visa, can drive out along this rather cool 27km causeway to the mid-point where the border controls are and have a look over at Saudi without going there. Small cost of 2BHD for the privilege.
At the border control there is a tower that contains a very empty coffee shop, even emptier restaurant as well as a lift that whips you upwards to the viewing area. Bit like SkyTower only a lot shorter. Downside for us that day was there is NO air conditioning inside the glass viewing room - my word was that an uncomfortable experience stepping out of a crowded and hot lift awaiting the beautiful blast of cooled air and finding it hotter still. Instant sweat upon forehead and other places.
Was a quick look, very neat, glimpses of Saudi through the heat haze - here it is..........
Pretty hey...........okay so all this photo shows is the remaining half of the 27km causeway - but trust me Saudi is out there. I just forgot to take my camera and only had the mobile camera as back, hence the lack of zoom.
Interesting fact - did you know there is a McDonalds at the border of Bahrain and Saudi? Quite the location really, as yes, it is a drive through, and no, we didn't stop there for a burger. Strange but true it is right next to the mosque, quite a classic road sign which I didn't photograph as I was driving - safety first kids.
And hopes were up when the causeway restaurant sign was first seen as I was rather thirsty and but not a lot on offer at 'restaurant' so just inhaled a bottle of much needed water, checked out the view and dashed back to air conditioned car.
Tune in for the next blog sometime soon, but I must away and do that teaching thing :-) Hugs to all xx
